One year ago

It has been a year, and I don't know what to say. We still miss you, Helen.

There has been quite a bit of news lately as the anniversary of Helen's death approached, please check out the news/articles section to see.

I know some people are planning small tea parties today in Helen's memory. If you have some time with friends, give them a hug, a cup of tea, and perhaps some vegan cakes and cotton candy.

Also, for those in New Orleans, WYES channel 12 will be showing the Southern Lens documentary on Helen's life at 9pm. There will be a repeat showing next week.

Take care, be good to yourselves, and give someone you love a hug today.

Urge your PBS station to show a film about Helen

Filed under: Announcements, News — cristin @ 22:54:04     Permalink

South Carolina ETV made a film about Helen earlier this year, and it will be offered up for PBS stations across America to pick up.

This is a note from Amy Shumaker who headed up the making of the film:

Here is the information to share with Helen's friends in other cities so they can ask their public television station to carry the program. It's important for them to act now!!!The way this works is that the PBS station records the show from the satellite and schedules it. Most stations will be finalizing their January schedules and possibly working on Feb. now. The program will be available to the stations for broadcast until 1/30/12

INFO:

The following South Carolina ETV program featuring Helen Hill's life and work will be offered to public television stations across the U.S. by NETA (National Educational Television Association). To see if your local station is a NETA member, please go to www.netaonline.org

Info for TV station: The NETA feed to record via satellite is scheduled on Sunday, November 25 @ 20:00 - 21:00

Helen Hill: Celebrating a Life in Film
The hour-long documentary is a loving look at the Columbia, South Carolina native and filmmaker who was tragically murdered in her New Orleans home in January 2007 by an intruder. Weaving together interviews with close friends and family members and many of her animated films, the program creates a touching snapshot of Hill and many of the pivotal moments in her life, while also offering a unique retrospective of her work.

For more info about the program, contact Amy Shumaker - shumaker@scetv.org.

NYC - Oct 24th screening of Helen's films.

Filed under: Announcements, News — cristin @ 10:24:24     Permalink

Anthology Film Archives is hosting a memorial screening of ten of Helen Hill's newly restored films at 8pm on Wednesday October 24th.

Admission will be $9, and a substantial portion of the proceeds will go to the 529 Educational Fund set up for Helen's son, Francis Paul Gailiunas. The entire program should last a little over an hour.

Anthology Film Archives:
32 Second Ave. (at 2nd Street)
ph. (212) 505-5181

From their program:

HELEN HILL MEMORIAL
This program of newly-preserved short films made by New Orleans-based
filmmaker Helen Hill includes animated and experimental works made
between 1990 and 2006. Because she never used a distributor and
because much of her creative work was damaged or lost in the
post-Katrina floods of 2005, it's a small miracle that so much of her
output is suddenly available, and in vivid new 16mm prints. When her
tragic death made headlines at the beginning of this year, it quickly
became clear how many people Helen Hill's work and life had affected.
Among the outpourings of affection and tribute was the collective
effort of many who came together to make this preservation and
restoration work happen: Colorlab, Harvard Film Archive, BB Optics,
New York University, the University of South Carolina, Women's Film
Preservation Fund, The Maxine Greene Foundation, the Orphan Film
Symposium, the Nickelodeon Theatre, and the Center for Home Movies.

Helen Hill's films are hand-drawn, figurative pieces infused with
humor and a loving spirit. Many blend live-action with pixilation,
cut-out, and cell animation. Collectively they are a batch of utopian
love letters, addressed to particular people, communities, and the
world.
