I have the heartwarming duty of opening the notifications from Charles Schwab of contributions to Francis Pop’s education fund. I never before really looked forward to seeing what is in my mailbox. As of Friday February 23rd, there is almost $13,000 in his account. As a reminder, checks can be made out to:

“Schwab 529” and put account number 695-600-002-208 in the memo section of the check.

Send to: Charles Schwab and Co., PO Box 3368, Greenwood Village, Colorado 80155-9972

Please let me know when you do this and send me notice at ryan [at] ulyssesfinancial [dot] com so I can check with Schwab. Thanks!

This Saturday Feb 24 there will be a jazz funeral for Helen Hill starting at 12:30pm at 3438 Cleveland Street.

There will be two brass bands, a vegan cupcake wagon parade and Ernie K-Doe’s hearse.

The parade will follow Angela Davis Parkway, Orleans Avenue, Claiborne Avenue and end at the Mother-In-Law Lounge at 1500 N. Claiborne Avenue where there will be a tea party celebrating Helen’s live.

Phowa ceremony update

This from Rodrigo Caballero:

Hello everyone,

I look forward to seeing/meeting you all at Helen’s phowa next Saturday. The ceremony is still set for Saturday at 5pm. If you have any questions about finding the centre (especially for those coming from out of town), please let me know as it is a bit of a confusing address. The map should help clarify.

http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=&daddr=1829+Victoria+DVSN+Vancouver&ie=UTF8&z=14&ll=49.256826,-123.067303&spn=0.02308,0.078106&om=1&iwloc=A

I also wanted to take this opportunity to invite those of you who don’t already know about it to make a memorial “leaf” for a memorial tree sculpture that is being made in Helen’s honour. These would make nice items to place on Helen’s shrine at the ceremony. Afterwards, they will be collected and sent altogether to the makers of the sculpture. More information about the sculpture can be found at:

http://nolanik.blogspot.com/2007/02/helen-hill-memorial-tree-sculpture.html

I am also considering setting up a collection for the Francis Pop Education Fund, a college savings fund that has been set up for Paul and Helen’s two year old son Francis Pop. More info at

http://www.helenhill.org/tributes.html

I will confirm this before the ceremony. Thank you all and again, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Warmly,

Rodrigo

I just got word today from Paul Ryan – the fellow who set up the education fund for Francis Pop

He says:

Please let everyone know that contributions are rolling in everyday and when I go through my mail I get notice of another check or two coming in – the outpouring brings tears to my eyes. We are now about $6,000, but it will cost a lot for Doctor Francis Gailiunas, or filmmaker Francis Gailiunas, or President of the United States of Canada Francis Gailiunas to get his necessary education. We can contribute through out the years and it will all continue to accrue for the little man. I know this he will continue to be on my annual Christmas list.

He also asks that if you make a contribution, please email him at ryan [at] ulyssesfinancial [dot] com so he can make sure that Schwab has the contribution and also so he can let Jake and Paul know about the contributions.

Nik has put more information, including a rough sketch of the memorial tree on her blog.

There is now information on where to send your leaves.

Thank you so much,

The Tea Party In Tribute To Helen Hill was a wonderful event. Thanks again to everyone who brought food, performed, sewed commemorative patches, or screened their films. We raised $399.00 towards inviting a series of visiting artists to curate programs of films in Helen’s Honor. They will be presented every other month as part of our TEA PARTIES IN TRIBUTE TO HELEN HILL.

While I was cleaning up from the event to get ready for our 7:30 p.m. film Helen’s husband Paul Gailunas called from Vancouver to thank everyone for remembering Helen in such a “sweet, sweet way.”

Paul asked me to thank everyone who helped put the tribute together and to tell everyone that he “really loves and misses everyone.”

He has been in Vancouver for a week and said “It’s hard, but I am enjoying the time I am spending playing with Francis”.

He went on to say that he was working with filmmaker Alex MacKenzie (who has a Steenbeck editing system in his apartment) who is helping him finish Helen’s film, The Florestine Collection.

I told him about the Second Line/Jazz Funeral being organized for Helen on the Saturday after Mardi Gras and he talked about how much Helen loved Second Lines and the Mother-In-Law Lounge.

He again asked me to make sure I told everyone how much he appreciated everything everyone is doing for Helen, Francis and him.

I was so touched by hearing from him, I completely forgot to ask him how he was recovering from the surgery on his hand. But he sounded as good and positive as could be expected.

We will be organizing the next Tea Party in March. I will let you all know through the Zeitgeist e-mail list and Pat Jolly when and where it is.

Sincerely,

Rene Broussard
